Diving Into The Darkness, a new documentary by Sydney filmmaker Nays Baghai, follows Heinerth on some death-defying expeditions to the world’s deepest caves in Mexico and even ice caves in Antarctica.

The Ocean Film Festival is a collection of short films celebrating the wonder and power of the sea. This year’s film line-up will be of particular interest to scuba divers as it features Diving into Darkness, a film about Canadian cave diving legend Jill Heinerth.

The new documentary film “Diving Into The Darkness” about renowned cave diver Jill Heinerth will begin streaming on Apple and Amazon in North America on June 6.

This is a documentary film about my life, which is a little humbling to even say. I’m so excited because I worked really closely with the director, Nays Baghai, and shared all my archives with him and then we did reenactments around the world to bring some of the stories to life. It’s a beautiful film, I’m so proud of it – it’ll leave you on the edge of your seat but also has a wonderful message.

At a post-screening Q&A for Diving into the Dark, yesterday at the Fiesta, friendly technical and philosophical questions were tossed out in the to the documentary’s subject, super cave diver Jill Heinerth and emerging filmmaker Nays Baghai. Suddenly, a declarative opinion came booming out from a woman toward the back of the theater: “You’re a hero!” Audience applause confirmed a consensus view in the house.

Diving into the Darkness not only encapsulates Jill Heinerth’s incredible career, but above all is a profound reflection on the spirit of exploration , which only a handful of us possess, but without which all of humanity could not progress. After watching it, we can only hope for a documentary focused on cave diving and the wonders it can uncover, or an epic film about the life of Jill Heiner and the pioneers of underwater caving exploration, in the style of ”  The Right Stuff  ” perhaps?
